Why the edge is separate
The base wager depends on the player’s final hand, dealer result, and playing decisions. A side bet may use only the first two player cards, the dealer upcard, the dealer’s bust total, a poker-style combination, or a progressive event.
Because the event and payout are different, the expected value must be calculated from the side bet’s exact outcome distribution. The blackjack strategy chart does not improve an independently settled wager.
Common side-bet families
Perfect Pairs pays when the first two player cards form a pair, often with different awards for mixed-color, colored, and suited pairs. 21+3 combines the player’s two cards with the dealer upcard to form a three-card poker hand. Lucky Ladies evaluates the player’s initial total of 20 and may pay more for particular card combinations.
Dealer-bust wagers pay by the number or color of cards in a dealer bust. Progressive bets reserve their largest prizes for rare specified card combinations and may depend on the current meter or a mandatory qualifying wager.
Pay-table sensitivity
Two tables can use the same side-bet name but pay different amounts, combine outcome categories differently, use a different number of decks, or impose a maximum aggregate payout. Those changes alter the return.
Record every outcome and payout before quoting an edge. A logo or marketing name is not enough, and a return calculated for a six-deck game may not apply to eight decks.
How to evaluate one
List mutually exclusive winning outcomes, calculate each probability under the exact dealing model, multiply probability by net payout, then subtract the probability-weighted losses. For a progressive, the jackpot amount becomes a variable in the equation.
Also consider covariance with the main hand when assessing session variance. Two wagers can settle from the same cards even though their expected values are calculated separately.

- Exact name and complete pay table
- Deck count and whether jokers are used
- Cards included in the evaluation
- Treatment of suited, colored, or mixed outcomes
- Progressive meter, reset value, and eligibility
- Maximum payouts or aggregate table caps
- Whether the wager is optional or mandatory
