Correlation and combined wagers, explained.

Understand why wagers settled from the same cards or spin cannot always be treated as independent.

Short version: Expected values add, but session variance depends on how results move together. Two wagers on one outcome can concentrate risk rather than diversify it.

Expectation still adds

If two wagers have expected values of −$1 and −$2, the combined expectation is −$3 whether their outcomes are related or independent.

This linear rule makes total theoretical cost straightforward when each component is priced correctly.

Variance does not simply add

When wagers often win or lose together, covariance changes the spread of the combined result. Pair Plus and Ante/Play share the same cards; roulette bets can overlap on the same pockets.

Positive correlation generally widens combined swings compared with independent wagers of similar size.

Hedges are priced

Covering opposite outcomes can reduce volatility while locking in a cost. Baccarat Banker plus Player, or broad roulette coverage, does not create value merely because more outcomes win something.

Calculate the net result for every mutually exclusive outcome after all stakes are included.

Practical exposure

A one-unit base bet plus several side bets is not a one-unit round. Track the sum at risk and the worst compatible loss.

Diversification language should be reserved for a measured reduction in combined variance, not simply a larger number of bets.

Working checklist

  • Add component expectations
  • Map overlapping outcomes
  • Measure total stake
  • Check covariance before combining variance
  • Do not call coverage free protection
