Progressive jackpot mathematics, explained.

Estimate how a growing meter changes theoretical return and why a break-even point may still be impractical.

Short version: A progressive adds value equal to jackpot probability multiplied by the amount above its baseline, provided the wager is eligible and the probability model is known.

Strategy changes, taxes, sharing, caps, and meter rules may require adjustment.

Baseline and meter

The reset amount is already part of the base pay table when the published return includes it. Only value above that baseline is incremental.

Multiple meters may need separate contributions.

Eligibility

Maximum credits, a side wager, denomination, or specific feature mode may be required. Nonqualifying action receives no jackpot value.

Linked networks also mean another player can reset the meter.

Strategy feedback

In video poker, a larger royal changes close hold decisions and therefore jackpot probability. A fixed-probability shortcut becomes less exact as the meter grows.

In slots, insufficient public reel data may prevent a defensible threshold entirely.

Practical EV

A theoretical positive meter can still involve extreme variance, long waiting time, limited opportunities, and tax consequences.

Expected value is not the same as likelihood of collecting before reset.
