Progressive Video Poker

Determine how a growing royal jackpot changes return and potentially changes close holds.

Bottom line: A progressive can add meaningful value, but only the eligible wager, current meter, contribution rules, and strategy-adjusted return belong in the calculation.

Incremental return

Start with the base game at its reset royal value. Multiply the extra jackpot amount by the strategy-dependent probability of the qualifying royal to estimate added return.

Because strategy can change as the meter grows, the royal probability is not always constant.

Eligibility

Many machines require maximum credits, a side wager, player-card insertion, or a particular denomination. Linked banks may share a meter while standalone machines do not.

A displayed jackpot is irrelevant if the chosen wager does not qualify.

Strategy changes

As royal value rises, four-card and some three-card royal draws gain value relative to made hands or other draws. Thresholds depend on the base pay table.

Using ordinary strategy understates the progressive’s potential and may miss the point at which a close hold changes.

Practical costs

Progress meters attract faster play and larger required wagers. Compare theoretical advantage with variance, bankroll, tax treatment, and the possibility of shared or capped prizes.

A positive theoretical meter does not guarantee realization before another player wins the jackpot.
